Description

  • Own and deliver quarterly and long-term engineering outcomes that align with company objectives.
  • Lead engineers through ambiguity and open-ended problems by providing clarity and direction.
  • Shape the architecture and technical strategy for large-scale data and backend systems across multiple teams.
  • Design scalable and extensible reporting systems that support Affirm’s broader engineering standards.
  • Partner with product, compliance, servicing, credit, analytics, and design teams to define data-driven solutions.
  • Ensure high availability and reliability of data pipelines and services through monitoring, alerting, and recovery practices.
  • Reduce system fragility and operational burden by driving operational improvements.
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, design reviews, and technical leadership.
  • Write technical proposals, documentation, and tech talks to share best practices and raise engineering standards.
  • Support safe deployment and resilient system changes in large, complex codebases.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience designing and building large-scale data pipelines and distributed backend systems.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, Kotlin, or similar programming languages.
  • Experience delivering high-volume, highly available systems using AWS, MySQL, Airflow, Spark, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience defining technical strategy for complex, cross-team initiatives.
  • Ability to design elegant, extensible systems that balance short-term needs with long-term scalability.
  • Experience building resilient systems with monitoring, alerting, and safe deployment practices.
  • Comfort driving significant changes in large, complex codebases.
  • History of mentoring engineers, unblocking teams, and shaping best practices beyond your immediate group.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and drive clarity across stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with distributed backend systems is required; leadership experience is highly valued.
