Description

  • Design, implement, and iterate on gameplay AI systems in Unreal Engine using behavior trees, blackboards, EQS, and navigation/pathfinding.
  • Build enemy AI behaviors including perception, patrol, chase, combat, and state logic for horror gameplay mechanics.
  • Collaborate with designers to translate pacing, tension, scares, and puzzle logic into tunable AI systems.
  • Work with animators and gameplay programmers to ensure AI-driven characters move and react convincingly.
  • Optimize AI systems for performance across target platforms and resolve pathfinding, perception, and decision-making bottlenecks.
  • Debug and resolve AI-related issues during production, QA, and post-launch using Jira.
  • Document AI system architecture, workflows, and design patterns in Confluence.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested C++ and/or Blueprint code in Unreal Engine.
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and sprint planning.
  • Stay current on AI techniques and Unreal Engine features to improve existing systems.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of professional game development experience focused on gameplay AI or systems programming.
  • Hands-on Unreal Engine experience, including Behavior Trees, Blackboards, EQS, and navigation systems.
  • Strong proficiency in C++ and comfort working in both C++ and Blueprint.
  • Solid understanding of game AI concepts such as pathfinding, state machines, perception systems, and decision-making architectures.
  • Experience shipping at least one commercial game title, in whole or in part.
  • Experience with performance profiling and optimization in Unreal Engine.
  • Experience using Jira and Confluence, or comparable tools.
  • Strong collaboration skills in an iterative, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience building AI for horror, stealth, or tension-driven gameplay (preferred).
  • Familiarity with animation systems such as state machines, blend spaces, and IK as they relate to AI-driven characters (preferred).
  • Experience with machine learning techniques applied to gameplay, such as procedural behavior or adaptive difficulty (preferred).
  • Prior experience at a small or indie studio (preferred).
  • Familiarity with source control tools such as Perforce or Git in a game production pipeline (preferred).
  • Passion for horror games, narrative-driven experiences, or the Poppy Playtime franchise (preferred).
  • Experience working on systems that needed to scale or evolve beyond MVP (preferred).

Benefits

  • Remote contract role.
  • Contract duration through May 2027.
  • Hourly contract rate of $48–$64 in select major metro areas, $42–$56 in several other metro areas, and $36–$48 in all other U.S. locations.
