Description

  • Deliver medium-complexity initiatives from technical discovery through implementation, managing estimates, scope, risks, and trade-offs.
  • Design and build accessible, adaptable, scalable, and reusable mobile-first Wikipedia web experiences.
  • Develop RESTful APIs, including schema and contract design, monitoring, iteration, and scalable data pipelines.
  • Build software that is testable, observable, and easy to debug, with instrumentation for product analysis.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, analysts, and native app engineers on pragmatic cross-platform solutions.
  • Identify high-impact technical opportunities, clarify priorities, and align the team on outcomes and capacity.
  • Follow standards for code review, technical design, testing, documentation, accessibility, observability, and decision-making.
  • Plan work with awareness of upstream and downstream operational effects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5–10+ years of related professional experience building production web applications and services.
  • Strong professional experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, Vue.js or similar JavaScript frameworks, and backend languages such as PHP.
  • Experience building responsive or mobile-first web experiences with attention to performance, accessibility, and usability.
  • Experience designing and integrating server-side APIs.
  • Experience delivering independently in a lean environment.
  • Commitment to the Wikimedia Foundation’s mission and values.
  • Experience integrating webview-based experiences into existing iOS or Android apps (preferred).
  • Experience launching and maintaining native or cross-platform mobile applications (preferred).
  • Experience with mobile games, interactive experiences, data science, machine learning, AI, or agentic coding (preferred).
  • Familiarity with Wikipedia, wikitext, Markdown, MediaWiki, other content management systems, open source, or distributed remote teams (preferred).
