Description

  • Shape the new data and AI team, calibrate hiring, run interviews, and make final hiring decisions for senior data scientists, data engineers, and the AI Consultant.
  • Onboard new hires effectively, clarify ownership and success metrics, and turn the group into a cohesive team.
  • Define the team’s role and interfaces with Platform, Product, Operations, CX, and Finance, including what the team owns, consults on, and does not do.
  • Translate company strategy and leadership priorities into a concrete roadmap and quarterly OKRs, with explicit trade-offs across competing initiatives.
  • Set the AI strategy and intake process for the data function, deciding which AI use cases are worth building and which are not.
  • Drive delivery quality and production reliability for models, pipelines, dashboards, and data products, including incident response and postmortems.
  • Establish engineering standards for code review, testing, observability, and documentation.
  • Own business-oriented ROI reporting and partner with Finance on capitalization, build-vs-consult tracking, and headcount justification.
  • Develop and coach team members, run performance reviews, and grow senior ICs into tech leads.
  • Represent ShipMonk externally through writing, speaking, and community engagement to help attract talent.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional experience in data science, data engineering, or analytics engineering, with at least 2 years leading a team of data scientists or data engineers.
  • Demonstrable hiring track record with multiple successful senior data science or engineering hires.
  • Proven experience shipping models or data products into production with measurable business impact.
  • Strong hands-on skills in Python and SQL, with comfort in dbt and a cloud data warehouse such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift.
  • Ability to run technical interviews credibly and pair on difficult technical problems.
  • Strong business judgment, including examples of killing scope, re-sequencing a roadmap, or pushing back on leadership for a better outcome.
  • Active daily use of modern AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude Code, or Copilot, with clear examples of how AI changed your work.
  • Strong written English for async discussion, strategy docs, and cross-functional decision-making.
  • Preferred: experience building a team from scratch, taking over a newly assembled team, or rebuilding a struggling one.
  • Preferred: experience in transportation, supply chain, e-commerce logistics, or another domain where data products affect operational and financial outcomes.
  • Preferred: experience standing up or running an applied AI function, including LLM tooling, agent workflows, or prompt engineering at production scale.
  • Preferred: experience leading distributed or hybrid teams and partnering with Finance on capitalization and ROI reporting.
  • Preferred: Master's or PhD in a quantitative field such as Data Science, Statistics, Operations Research, or Computer Science.
